Somali Bravanese Association In London (SBAIL) is a Registered Charity (Charity No: 1114410) and a Company Limited by Guarantee (Company No: 05659288) based in Haringey, in North London. SBAIL have operated in Haringey since 2001 with the aim to relieve the poverty of Somali refugees and other minority groups to advance their education and educate the general public of their rights and needs.
SBAIL offers advice and advocacy service for asylum seekers, refugees and those from BME backgrounds in a range of specialist topics including NASS support, welfare benefits, training and employment, health, housing, education. We run outreach service for vulnerable and isolated individuals and their families, whom we visit at home to assess and address their needs. SBAIL offers free English classes for refugees and Supplementary school for children aged 6-16. We have a day centre offering Soical clubs for elderly, women and young people. We also offer ICT classes for children and young people. SBAIL offer one-to-one support to individuals to find voluntary and paid work, training, vocational and high educational courses and CV preparation. We provide counselling service and offer practical support to destitute asylum seekers and refugees. We offer many volunteering opportunities at our office where a number of local refugee professionals come to do voluntary work to improve their language skills and gain more experience.
We are looking for committed and dedicated trustees and volunteers to join our board of trustees. The board meets every three months to discuss strategic and governance issues concerning SBAIL and in addition you as a board member will be involved in our fundraising activities. You do not need to have any previous management committee experience in order to join. You need to be committed to the needs of local asylum seekers and refugees and be willing to contribute your time and skills however; on average two half-days of your time every month will be required. In exchange you will gain the opportunity to enhance your skills and CV and to make a real difference to the lives of local asylum seekers and refugees.
